Ben Junior Atkinson continues after major win at 2022 Chariots of Thunder.

To say that Season 2022 has been a break-out year for Benny J Atkinson would be an understatement.  Into his 3rd full season of racing 410 Sprintcars Benny J achieved his first Feature Race win plus completing the last night of Chariots of Thunder with a resounding win in the last Feature Race of the series.

Asked to sum up his racing this year Benny J says “we had some really good racing but also had a fair bit of bad luck as well.  It’s been our most successful season so far and winning one of the biggest races on our calendar was quite critical.”

Now competing at the Toowoomba Speedway in Queensland, Benny J has been consistently fast and making the Top 5 cars, only to suffer a combination of making some mistakes but also being the innocent victim of race crashes (which he accepts as part of the racing).

“We’ve put ourselves in really good positions in races to win them only to suffer bad luck” Benny J explains.

With the taste of Feature Race wins now firmly in his mind, Benny J isn’t content now to just make up the numbers in the field, he is setting his sights on podium placings and race wins.

“Honestly these results sort of turn people’s heads, if you are racing at such a good level with good cars a lot of big sponsors are there watching their own cars.”

Benny continues by saying “If you are winning races with the best in the country a lot of people look into helping you in the next season or putting you in a car.  There’s all these variables of winning races not just for us, it’s for us as a team and as a driver we try and open ourselves up to opportunities to drive better cars and for better teams and to get out of Australia as well”.

Benny J has also set his sights on one day having that opportunity to race overseas, in his words “That’s the dream…..I promise you, I don’t want to be cutting trees for the rest of my life, my dream is to be a full time race driver”.

For Season 2023 Benny J has set himself goals to finish on the podium a lot more, be more consistent and win a lot more races.

“Everywhere we go now I have the expectation to put myself on the podium” says Benny J.

We are not there to have fun now, we are there to win races”.

Benny J cannot thank his sponsors enough, and this year saw the end of the relationship with long time sponsor AeroFlow.
